Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry.  His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood until a year before his death in 1977. Waterville was a favourite holiday spot of Charlie Chaplin and his family, who used to stay in the Butler Arms Hotel. They first visited the town in 1959 and came back every year for over ten years. There is a statue reacted of him in the centre of the village in his memory.
